Ribagorza
is the easternmost land of Huesca. Bordering Lérida and France,
its owes its name to the medieval county that includes the rivers Ésera,
Isábena and Noguera-Ribagorzana.
Each valley of the region is in itself a unique route in nature, history
and tradition, which have been preserved up to the present day and merge
to be enjoyed by the visitor.

Graus
and Benaberre are the natural entrances
to Ribagorza. Once again, in these villages and along the routes, art
samples are exhibited. In its old quarter, Graus offers the traveller
its historical sites, such as its Main Square, the Peña basilica
and Chinchín, Linés
and Barón
gates. Continuing northwards, the highest Pyrenean peaks and
nearby. The Aneto and Madaleta
peaks overlook the landscape and the orography, forming part of the Posets-Madaleta
Nature Park. We can approach Vilas
del Turbón from Perarrúa,
Besians and Campo.
After going past Seira (church
of San Pedro de Tabernas ancient Visighotic monastery), the spectacular
narrow mountain pass called Ventanillo
is the entrance to the highest land of Ésera river valley which
flows to El Run where the Virgen de
Gracia hermitage, of a Roman-Lombard
style, can be visited. Castejón de Sos
is a public service centre and a perfect place for the practice of gliding
and hand-gliding. Chía (XIII
century hermitage of San Martín),
Villanova (Santa María and
San Pedro Roman church), Urmella
(Justo and Pastor Saints), Eriste
and Benasque (the Count of Ribagorza
Palace, Juste House and Santa María
la Mayor church). Cerler is the highest
village of this valley. It has a superb ski resort that allows us to practice
skiing at a heigh of 2.600 m. above sea level.
The practice of hunting in Benasque Game Hunting National Reserve, fishing down the rivers Ésera and Isábena, as well as mushrooms harvesting in autumn have turned this imcomparable tourist scenery into a paradise for nature lovers. |

Every
Ribagorza stream and river allows the traveller to discover a wide range
of amazing possibilities for his free time. The Isábena
invites us to comtemplate history through its many monuments. Roda
de Isábena offers the traveller a wonderful, unmistakable
view. It was built at the top of a flat mountain and is crowned by its
church tower (San Vicente and San Valero cathedral
and San Ramón crypt and tomb). In the northern side the valley
gets narrower -Obarra narrow mountain pass- and reveals Obarra
Santa Maria Monastery (XI century Roman-Lombard style). Bonansa,
Laspaules, Serraduy
and la Puebla de Rueda are all linked
to the history of this valley.

The
Noguera Ribagorzana is the third of
Ribagorza valleys, the easternmost point of Huesca and the border between
Huesca and Lérida provinces. Benaberre
is the capital town of the county since its conquest from the Muslims
in 1058 by Ramiro I and it is also the natural access to the village.
Every places in the village evokes the noble lineage of these lands. The
Main Square, the walls that surround the village, its church castle and
the Sacred Art museum are worth a visit.
In every eastern Ribagorza village, samples of art are exhibited. Tolva (XII century), Luzás old medieval fortrees (XI cent. ), Montañana (declared a national historical monument), Arén (with its a splendid Main Square overlooked by the Governor´s Castle) and in Sopeira the Alaón monastery which is supposed to have its origin in the Visigothic times. Monuments, history, landscapes. . . take us along the banks of the river Noguera ribagorzana to Montanuy, which is the starting point for many excursions. The traveller will be overjoyed with so many subtle discoveries. |
